There’s No Place Like Home

“Just click your heels three times, and repeat after me, ‘There’s no place like home…there’s no place like home…there’s no place like home.' ”

Does that line sound familiar? As you may recall, after Dorothy’s long journey seeking her passage home by the Wizard of Oz, Glenda, the Good Witch of the North, informs Dorothy she’s always had the power to return home.  At her time of greatest despair, Dorothy learns all she had to do is click her heels three times and repeat the phrase, “There’s no place like home.”

And when Dorothy gives it a shot, what happens? Magically, she finds herself back in Kansas, in her home, in her bedroom, surrounded by familiar friends and loved family members.

There’s something comfortable—a sense of coziness, warmth and security—about being home.  As an Alumni Association, we’re thrilled to be home, back in Mather Mansion on Euclid Avenue. Mather Mansion, one of Cleveland’s last remaining Millionaire’s Row mansions, was once home to the Association and University Advancement. A number of years ago, the building was closed due to much needed repair. Now we’re back, in a renovated space that is so much more than a building, it’s a home. Returning to Mather was a bit more intensive than clicking our heels three times, but no twisters, thankfully, were involved either.

Along with our offices, we have an Alumni Lounge—a dedicated space for you when you visit campus.  Stop by and grab a cup of coffee. Check your email or converse with other alumni on premises.  Or you may wish to rent out one of the beautiful rooms on the first floor for a staff retreat, a reception or a small wedding. Alumni receive discounts on space rentals through CSU Conference Services.

There are few places like Mather Mansion, and it’s so good to be home!

Speaking of home, this upcoming week is Homecoming, and I hope you come back to campus to take it all in. You don’t need to go to Kansas to experience that down home feeling, just visit us on Euclid. Or if you work in the heart of downtown, come to our first downtown pep rally at Tower City. If you love a parade, come on out and watch the parade or, better yet, march in the parade. You be the float!  The parade ends at VikeFest on the front of Mather Lawn where we’ll feature music, inflatables, an alumni beer garden, food trucks and so much more.

Friday evening features our premiere event of the year, the 25th Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards where we will honor 10 extraordinary alumni for their personal and professional achievements.  We will also unveil our new Fascinating Alumni recognition book during the program.

Lastly, a number of reunions are taking place on Saturday, along with two Signature Classes and the All-Alumni Brunch.

Homecoming offers something for everyone.

We look forward to your return home…you can even click your heels while here if you’d like.
