That time Superman lived across the street from campus

There’s a scene in the recent Superman Legacy movie with Clark and Lois in an apartment. When we see the building’s exterior, Cleveland eagle-eyed observers will recognize it as the University Lofts on Euclid Avenue across from CSU’s campus.

In the past several years, Cleveland has served as a backdrop for a number of blockbusters, which means film crews have invariably found themselves at or very close to campus.

Here we breakdown the Cleveland State connection to the silver (and small screen) throughout the past several years.

Our list is by no means exhaustive, and as Cleveland continues to draw filmmakers, it’s sure to grow in the coming years.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

The Marvel movie filmed big scenes in the Woodling Gymnasium and Fenn Tower.

Cherry (2021)

Starring Tom Holland and shot in Cleveland, CSU students appeared as extra and we’re told the crew used CSU’s School of Film and Media Arts’ facilities to edit part of the film.

Shooting Stars (2023)

Lebron James’ biopic which streamed on Peacock used the Wolstein Center to shoot basketball game scenes. Plus, a number of alumni worked on the crew.

Superman Legacy (2025)

In addition to the aforementioned scene, many students and alumni worked either as extras or on the film crew.

Honorable Mention

Film School insiders note that alumni have worked on a number of other recent films and shows shot in Cleveland as well, including Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), A Man Called Otto (2022), White Noise (2022), Eenie Meenie (2025) and Baby Animal Cam (2023).
