If there’s one thing that almost consistently defines a Viking, it's resilience. CSU students are a special breed, who work hard for everything they achieve. Here are some alumni who faced significant challenges in school, but persevered nonetheless.

Susan Julius (’88)

After being placed on an alternate list and nearly not admitted to CSU’s physical therapy program, Susan became top of her class and won the Mary McMillan scholarship. She later became a doctor at age 31 after initially backing away from pre-med.

“All the adversity I faced made me stronger and more determined to succeed.”

Thomas Krupar (’88)

After a rough start to college, Thomas arrived at CSU unsure of himself. With faculty and peer support, he gained confidence, earned his degree, and became a successful physical therapist and entrepreneur.

“I was scared at first, but CSU gave me confidence. It was the best time of my life up to that point.”

Rachel Arzuaga (’13)

Rachel was a first-generation college student who initially felt lost navigating the process. Supportive faculty helped guide her, offering encouragement and direction when she needed it most. She went on to graduate, launch a successful career, and now gives back by mentoring students who face the same challenges she once did.

“I never thought I could do this. Now I mentor students like me.”

Ronald Watson-Bolden (’01)

Despite a below-average LSAT score, Ronald was admitted to CSU Law. He honed his oratory skills, earned awards, and became a proud and successful attorney.

“I was accepted despite the odds—and I’ve been smiling ever since.”

Audrey Atzel (’20)

An older, military veteran student facing depression and personal struggles, Audrey found healing and focus at CSU. She earned two degrees, was named valedictorian, and gave the commencement speech.

“CSU helped me believe in myself again.”
