That kind of sounds like we're preparing for a zombie apocalypse, but we're really not. This is actually far from it.

There are just days left until the Recreation Center's Homecoming 5K Race kicks off. We hope that you've been gearing up and preparing for the big day and wanted to share a few tips to help you get the most out of the race on Saturday.

  • Stay hydrated - This, of course, is a no brainer. A rule of thumb is that you should consume 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. You athlete over-achiever types need even more though. Men should aim for 13 glasses, actually. Women should shoot for 9. You definitely don't want to be dehydrated.
  • Take it easy - You've been preparing for a while now and the last thing you want to do leading up to the race is to overtax your body. Relax the night before. Get enough rest. Read a book. Listen to calming music. We've heard it might even be nice to get a massage!
  • Prepare the essentials - There's nothing worse than scrambling at the last minute, plus it ruins your race day frame of mind. Be sure to get all of your gear together the night before. Shoes, socks, shorts, shirt, etc. Lay it all out. That way, when morning comes, you can grab and go. And trim you toenails. That will spare you any potential foot pain while running.
  • Stretch properly - Another no-brainer. We certainly don't want you crawled up in ball somewhere on campus because you pulled a hamstring. Do yourself the favor to warm those muscles up.

Keeping these few tips in mind will help ensure you have a blast during the run. Hope to see you at the finish line!
